Closure Of R18.com And The Removal Of Titles From Fanza: Don’t wait!

With the pending closure of R18.com, users have been scrambling to backup their libraries before they are forever locked behind a wall of DRM this month. One of the main issues with DRM is that it prevents legitimate users from accessing content they have paid for. When R18.com shuts down, it will no longer be possible for users to access the DRM-protected content they have purchased. This can be especially frustrating for those who have paid a significant amount of money, all in the name of supporting the studios, while trying to obtain content legally.

On the reverse side, Fanza has removed all Idol videos (even those already purchased in peoples collections) over to DMM TV which sits behind brand new Widevine DRM. This is frustrating news for fair-use advocates, since it intentionally forces users to use software which may be incompatible with their legacy devices, blocks the ability to place-shift their legally paid-for libraries, as well as opens the door to companies being able to revoke access to your content arbitrarily at any time (Just like R18.com).

While this project has always been focused on making JAV cataloging simple, yet powerful, it has always tried to incorporate features (like place-shifting) to help users better manage their legally paid-for libraries. However, as with all things, there is no guarantee on how long this situation will last. I strongly suggest that if users care about these topics, that they act now before it becomes too late in the future.
