With the Patreon early access release of v1.4.2, I just wanted to share some news regarding machine language translation for subtitles! 

This is a subject that I’ve been investing a lot of time in researching these days, as it is a tricky topic to navigate. Two of the most popular machine language translation websites in use are Google Translate and DeepL Translator. Adding the ability to machine translate your own subtitles isn’t as straight forward as it seems, since most websites ether employ counter-measures to prevent non-web use, or expect users to pay high fees to gain access. For example, Google Translate uses a special token to authorize requests that come from the web. If you are not Google, you do not have this token and will have to pay $20 per 1 million characters of text translated.

The good news is that the process for generating this special token has been reverse engineered! (I(๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ

I am currently in the process of testing how well this method works, as well as which libraries best integrate with it. The downside is that this is all completely backdoor. Like DRM decryption, if the companies involved decide to change their methods, research on another backdoor or fix will be required. I’m hoping by the end of this month (or sometime next month) to have a version ready for Patreon testing!
